“Construction in Health Care, What You Don’t Know Can Cost You.”
Crown Plaza Hotel - MONROE/JAMESBURG
390 FORSGATE DR, JAMESBURG, NJ 08831
Dear Healthcare Professional,
The truth is, even in these difficult times, many Health Care Facilities are planning major construction projects. Some reasons for constructions are to provide improved patient care or updating their ageing infrastructure resulting in efficient operations.
There are many reasons for doing construction such as.
• My hospital is at maximum capacity all the time, I need more space.
• The facility is old and inefficient to operate, it needs new Hi-Tech Equipment.
• The need to modernize specific areas of the hospital operating rooms, maternity and emergency
departments.
• Purchase of new Major Medical Equipment.
• What is your reason?
Who should attend:
Anyone at a management level in a facility that is planning or actively involved in a construction project including but not limited to CEO, COO, CFO, CNO, CPO, VP, Facility Management, Projectct Managers, Procurement Manager/Director, and Construction Managers.
Program objectives:
Provide you with a general working knowledge that will better enable you to cost effectively deal with a major health care construction project. The program will review the key steps to assist you in project development and implementation from planning to completion.
Programs Structure:
Our program consists of panel discussions with topics ranging from Architectural and Planning to implementation of the process. This is a presentation of what to do and what not to do for anyone that is managing or is involved in a construction project at their facility.

A letter from Hire Heroes USA CEO
I am pleased to welcome you to the very first edition of the Hire Heroes USA Newsletter, and I am privileged to be a recent addition to the HHUSA team. Your receipt of this transmission indicates that you are among employers/potential employers of our returning veterans, donors and supporters of our program, or veterans whom we are honored to serve. We need more of each, and you are our best "recruiter" so please take the initiative to forward our Newsletter on to other employers, donors, and veterans you may know. Our work together is devoted to the return of our "heroes" to the civilian workforce and to their peer group. Some veterans, in their humility, prefer to avoid the word heroes, but we civilians hope that they can understand that they are heroes to us.

AHRMM Update
Below is an update on the major initiatives staff have been working on since the August board meeting (operational activities/core functions like annual conference educational planning and logistics, membership recruitment, etc. are not included in the below update).
“Best of AHRMM" Regional Meeting
The “Best of AHRMM” regional meeting will be held November 2 at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare and will showcase some of the Learning Lab sessions from this year's AHRMM Conference. The “Best of AHRMM” business plan was presented to the AHRMM Board and then to the Education Task Force. The Education Task Force, with the Director of Education, have created a program that includes five educational sessions covering three key areas: distribution, strategic planning, and purchasing; dedicated face-to-face networking time; CEUs; presentation handouts; and continental breakfast, lunch, and two refreshment breaks. Complete information about the program and registration is available online at: http://www.ahrmm.org/ahrmm_app/education/programs_and_events/best_ahrmm/07_chicago/index.jsp
AHRMM HIMSS Healthcare Supply Chain Symposium
The AHRMM HIMSS Healthcare Supply Chain Symposium education program is scheduled for February 24 from 8 am – 4 pm in Orlando, Florida. The AHRMM Technology Committee, HIMSS Supply Chain SIG, as well as AHRMM and HIMSS staff are finalizing the education with September 10 as the goal for completion so the details can be included in the HIMSS08 conference brochure. Based on feedback shared after last year’s symposium HIMSS is providing great support and pushing to have accurate and timely information available to positively impact attendance. Once available, the details will be posted to the AHRMM and HIMSS web sites.
SCMetrix™
AHRMM worked with Materials Management in Health Care magazine to secure the cover story position in October for the launch of SCMetrix™. John Mateka and Dale Worthington were interviewed for the article in addition to the ASU team and one of their contacts. John Mateka will be featured on the cover of the October edition. This article will provide tremendous recognition and exposure for SCMetrix™ with the goal of impacting survey participation.
Compensation Survey
As previously mentioned at the August board meeting, AHRMM will conduct a compensation survey this fall. The survey has been developed and is being reviewed and edited by the Membership Committee. After the survey is finalized it will be sent to all members, prospects, and any other providers to gather as much data as possible. Initial results should be ready by first quarter of 2008.
AHA Leadership Summit
Building on Jean Sargent's strong presentation to the AHA Board at the AHA Leadership Summit this year, and in an effort to continue to raise awareness of supply chain issues amongst hospital CEOs, AHRMM will submit a presentation for consideration for next year's Leadership Summit in July of 2008. Based on the surveys of CEOs and the supply chain and the resulting presentations given by Jamie Kowalski and conversations Jean has had with him directly, the education proposal will be for Jamie Kowalski to be the presenter with Jean as a possible co-presenter. The Health Forum will notify AHRMM if the presentation has been accepted in early 2008.
MIT Efficient Healthcare Delivery Group (MEHD)
MEHD will proceed within two inter-connected areas: one aimed at better envisioning the future of the healthcare system and one aimed at developing new technologies and business practices. The first of these entails building a knowledge base, putting scenario planning processes in place, and more. The MEHD has excellent work to build on in this area and are confident that the effort will produce significant new understandings of the dynamics of the healthcare industry. MEHD feels that there are a number of ways the AHRMM can interact in the above mentioned area. In the second area of work, MEHD plans to do research on a range of topics, some focused on sectors of the industry and plan on discussing this level of the research extensively with its partners over the next couple months as they firm up their research agenda. MEHD will host a kickoff research meeting in late September to get different perspectives to look at the MEHD issues and action plans. The MEHD has invited Jean Sargent as AHRMM President and me as AHRMM Executive Director to participate.
CHeS/GS1/AHRMM Meeting
CHeS has organized a meeting in late September to discuss how CHeS, GS1 US, and AHRMM can work together to help hospitals adopt and implement GS1 standards. Jean Sargent, Bob Perry, and AHRMM Executive Staff have been invited to participate. The agenda has not been set for this meeting.
Managing Hospital Materials Management Book
A small group of AHRMM volunteers (John Mateka, Mike Ferris, Mary Jo Felix, and Jean Sargent) met with ARAMARK representatives in early August to begin the processes of re-writing the Managing Hospital Materials Management book. Chapter outlines are due September 30, with first drafts due January 31, 2008. Debbie Franco secured writers for a chapter specific to the military. The book may be republished under a different name (yet to be decided) and ready for market in 3rd or 4th quarter of 2008.
